Annual Boerne Soaring Pilgrimage

Note New Dates - It appears that more people can attend if we fly to Boerne on the 22, so that is the new primary date. Rain date is Jul 29. Please adjust your calendars accordingly. -GE

In an effort to promote non-local soaring, I am trying to resurrect the Annual Boerne Pilgrimage this year and the preliminary dates are Jul 15 or Jul 22 (the latter, bad WX date). Ian has kindly volunteered to pilot the club’s Grob so there are 2 spots for people who are interested in being coached by an experienced XC pilot. If you want to fly in the Grob, please contact Ian for planning (cc me to keep me in the loop, please). In a nutshell, the plan is to fly from FLF to Boerne and spend the night there at the airport (good BBQ nearby). The next day we fly back to FLF. Straight distance is a non-intimidating 145 Km, which should be doable in midsummer even if you’re flying a bookshelf. In previous years some have flown to Uvalde or some other interesting tp first. We will likely fly in 2 groups, low & hi performance (straight line, and long task respectively). The weather is definitely here. I just flew 1000Km (2 flights) and 12 hours this past weekend (editor's note, EE ref. is to 6/3-4/06). I encourage you to join; it is a lot of fun.

Field and Ship Notes:

Due to ill health it will be a long time before I will be able to fly again. Meanwhile Glider 424, a SGS-1-26D sits neglected in it's tiedown. It needs someone to fly it. I'm asking $7500.00 which includes trailer. Recent annual - 5/06. If interested contact me by phone @ 250-1009 or email bryan13162@worldnet.att.net.

Wanted to Buy:

WTB Audio vario. I am interested in buying a used audio vario in good working order. If you have one that you want to sell, please contact me at gonzalo_echeverry@sbcglobal.net.

GE

WTB handheld radio. A few members have asked me about any available Vertex or IComm radios. If you have a working unit that's just gathering dust send me an e-mail and I'll post it in the for sale area.

Please help welcome our newest (returning) member - Dave

T-Shirts and hats - straw poll results

Six people responded to the T-Shirt/Hat poll (...one was my brother who lives in LA) and most wanted slightly different versions of the choices originally suggested. Since this didn't result in anything approaching a minimum order I'm going to take a different tack. I'll be buying a dozen or two large and extra large Beefy T's with a 2-color FLF logo and will leave them bagged in the club house with an envelope labeled with payment instructions.

A Club Ship Policy Update…

The following is a reminder about the ‘one-hour’ policy when flying the club ships. Sunday 6/11 was a flying day I was really looking forward to. The weather was good, lift great, and it seemed as if I could stay at cloud base as long as I wanted.

I had waited to launch until after all of the glass ships were up and seeing no other club members had decided to see just how long I could keep the club's 1-26 up. Did I mention that I hadn’t noticed that the radio was set to 122.3? Needless to say, one of our newest members showed up just after I launched and ended up waiting two hours for my return. The intercept by the towplane at 7000’ was rather interesting, thanks Wayne . And the close passes with 1T where I learned just how close you have to be to another ship to clearly see the pilot giving you the thumbs down signal were most exciting too, thanks Kelly. Yes, even I finally got the hint...

But I digress, on with the policy update:

To better ensure everyone’s flying habit is fulfilled, club ships are available in one hour increments. Here’s the policy update part - the OD will add a 3K tow fee to the daily log for the pilot that keeps any club ship out longer than one hour. The only exception being if positive radio communication is maintained with the OD and the ship’s continued availability is regularly verified. Using a club ship longer than an hour keeps our fellow club members on the ground and costs the club revenue for missed tows. So, don’t do it unless the OD told you on the radio that it’s OK. This is the part of a reminder where I might say something nasty about the no-good-son-of-a-so-and-so that caused this little policy update, but it was me and since I write the newsletter, we'll just move on.

See you at the field,

Pat "But I Never Got a Radio Call" Morris
