Attention FLF Partiers,

This event has been rescheduled for the rain day - 5/6

We're overdue for a shindig at FLF. So on Saturday, April 29th, we're going to have a badge camp during the afternoon followed by a barbecue in the evening. Wayne Smith will be our duty instructor that day and he will coordinate the badge camp details. Let's make May 6th the rain date. Supper will be the usual FLF routine; we provide the grill and you bring something to burn.

BFR Class Scheduled

I plan to hold a BFR ground glass at the field at 9:00 on Saturday April 29. Wayne is a scheduled instructor on the 29th and I have the 30th. Between the two of us we should be able to complete BFRs for those that need them this month.

FLF Exhibits at Burnet Air Show

Despite Allied bombs falling nearby and repeated Japanese Zero strafing runs, FLF aircraft and crews completed their mission without incident and returned safely home. Lucky for us, the bombs and bullets were fake, having been fired from Commerative Air Force planes conducting operations on 8 April 2006 in the Burnet, Texas theatre. OK Virginia, it was only an air show. But the war birds were real--and there were plenty of them--everything from Stearmans to B-25s. Crowds were treated to static displays, aerobatic shows, flybys and the aforementioned simulated attacks. FLF was there too. Al Lang set up his glider just off the NW corner of the CAF museum ramp where he attracted plenty of visitors and fielded lots of questions. Thanks Al. And thanks to Wayne Smith for getting us that primo spot for our static display. Thanks also to Scott Cothrell, Gene Frey, Greg Jones and Lane Coleman for manning their posts, answering questions and promoting the quiet sport of soaring amidst the bedlam of a warbird air show. Our effort has already produced 3 visitors to FLF and a couple of them expressed interest in joining FLF.

Field and Ship Notes:

Jerry and Faith came out over the April 1st weekend and did annual inspections. The club ships all had their inspections except for the Grob which needs some special attention due to a recent AD. Check with the OD as to the Grob’s status before flying until further notice. And a big thanks to Jerry and Faith for all of their hard work.

New on 5/2 -

Due to ill health it will be a long time before I will be able to fly again. Meanwhile Glider 424, a SGS-1-26D sits neglected in it's tiedown. It needs someone to fly it. I'm asking $7500.00 which includes trailer. If interested contact me by phone @ 250-1009 or email bryan13162@worldnet.att.net.

T-Shirts and hats - a straw poll

Can one ever have enough silk-screened T’s or embroidered hats? I think not. I’d like to order a shirt that sports Gonzo’s design, but need to get an idea of member interest before spending the money. Please send me a note with a simple ‘yes and your preferred size’ or a ‘no-not interested’ in the subject line. As always, feel free to send comments too . These sample screens came from an online vendor and the prices are probably close to what the costs are actually going to be (i.e. $15 for a Hanes Beefy-T or $28 for a 50UV micro fiber sports shirt). As for the hat, I’m thinking embroidered with the bolt logo and would like to get member input on this item as well as price you’d be willing to pay to get one. I’ll need to do a little more research on embroidered hat vendors to find a suitable supplier.

awaiting your comments,

Pat Morris

Member Recruiting…The Fun Never Ends

Recruiting is an ongoing and ever present process for FLF. Remind your friends and mention at work, church, the bowling alley, etc. that guests are always welcome at FLF. Our only two demo flights on 4/1 were a coworker of mine and a friend of his. He had e-mailed me at the office and asked if I knew where he could go soaring because he had heard I knew of a club for the sport from another coworker (who had seen the Fox7 story). I work at a company of 450 employees and after a little research have found that there are about a half dozen private pilots who have gotten out of the activity for one reason or another - these are prime candidates for my recruiting efforts. There will soon be a posting on the my company’s intranet with FLF demo day details and a personal invitation to be my guest out at the field. If you would like a flyer of FLF demo day info ready for printing and posting on your company’s cork-board (electronic or actual) send me an e-mail and I’ll send it back your way.

See you at the field,

Pat
